Which macOS version do Mac gaming tools need?

By Bridgeplay · Last updated

The minimum macOS ranges from 10.15 for GeForce NOW to macOS 26 for Bridgeplay. Vermut needs macOS 14, the Whisky community fork needs macOS 15, Porting Kit 7 needs macOS 12, and Parallels Desktop 26 needs macOS 13.7. CrossOver publishes a compatibility matrix for each release, and it reaches further back than any other Wine-based tool here.

Several Wine-based tools, Bridgeplay included, also document that they need Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon.

I maintain Bridgeplay. The other rows come from each project’s own site, README or knowledge base, checked on 29 October 2026. Requirements change with new releases, so check the source before you buy or upgrade. For what each tool does and where it fits, see Ways to play Windows games on an Apple Silicon Mac.

Minimum macOS and chip, by tool

ToolMinimum macOSChipRosetta 2Source
BridgeplaymacOS 26 TahoeApple Silicon (M1 or later)Required; the Setup Assistant installs itREADME
CrossOverDepends on the CrossOver version; the matrix goes back to macOS 10.15. Apple Silicon needs macOS 11.1 and CrossOver 21 or later. macOS 26 needs CrossOver 25.1.1 or later.Intel or Apple Silicon (M1 or later)Not stated on the product page[1]
VermutmacOS 14 SonomaApple Silicon (M1 or later); Intel not supportedRequired; offered on first launch[2]
Whisky community forkmacOS 15 SequoiaApple Silicon (M-series)Not stated[3]

Porting Kit 7macOS 12Separate Apple Silicon and Intel buildsNot stated[5] [6]
Game Porting Toolkit 3.0 (Gcenx build)macOS 14 Sonoma; 16 GB RAM recommendedApple SiliconSee below[7]
Wine (Gcenx builds)Not statedBuilt for x86_64 (Intel)Needed on Apple Silicon (the builds target x86_64)[8]
Parallels Desktop 26macOS 13.7 Ventura (also listed: 14.7, 15.5, 26.0 or newer)Any Apple Silicon chip (M-series or A18 Pro), or Intel Core i5, i7, i9, Core M or XeonNot stated[9]
GeForce NOWmacOS 10.15Any Mac from 2009 or later; native Apple Silicon app since version 2.0.40Not needed for the native app[10] [11]

On Parallels, older macOS versions get an earlier Parallels release, and guest support can be limited [9]. Porting Kit’s about page says Apple Silicon support started with macOS 11.1 [12].

Why Bridgeplay needs macOS 26

Bridgeplay supports only macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later on Apple Silicon. It does not run on macOS 15 or earlier, or on Intel Macs. If you’re on an earlier macOS, CrossOver, Vermut, the Whisky fork or Parallels may cover you; the which should I pick table lists options by macOS version. Install steps are in the install guide, and the FAQ covers the rest.

Game Porting Toolkit versions

Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK) contains D3DMetal, which translates DirectX 11 and 12 to Metal [13]. Apple’s download page doesn’t list system requirements [14], so the table uses what Apple’s other materials, CodeWeavers and community builds document.

VersionWhat’s documentedSource
GPTK 1.xReleased 6 June 2023 at WWDC23. Apple’s Homebrew formula (version 1.1) builds its Wine from CrossOver 22.1.1 source for x86_64, so it runs under Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon.[13] [15]
GPTK 2Released June 2024; AppleGamingWiki notes it promised AVX2 instruction support. CrossOver 25 (March 2025) shipped D3DMetal 2.1.[13] [16]
GPTK 3.0CrossOver 26 (February 2026) ships D3DMetal 3.0. Gcenx’s binary build of GPTK 3.0 needs an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14 or later.[16] [7]
GPTK 4The current download on Apple’s developer site as of 29 October 2026. Apple’s page doesn’t list requirements.[14]

AppleGamingWiki’s advice for the DIY route: macOS 14 Sonoma as the base, macOS 15 Sequoia for games that use AVX or AVX2 instructions, and macOS 26 Tahoe for the experimental MetalFX integration. It doesn’t recommend macOS 13 Ventura because of Steam crashes [13].

Rosetta 2

Rosetta 2 translates Intel (x86_64) code for Apple Silicon. Bridgeplay runs its Wine engine under Rosetta 2, Vermut requires it [2], and Apple’s own GPTK formula builds for x86_64 [15]. Rosetta after macOS 27 covers what Rosetta’s future means for these tools.
