The Witcher 3 on an Apple Silicon Mac
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a Windows game with no native Mac version, so on an Apple Silicon Mac it runs through a Windows compatibility layer. Bridgeplay runs the Steam version on macOS 26 or later; the maintainer’s test on an M5 Max was playable, but player reports are mixed (as of 29 October 2026: 5 playable, 1 with issues, 6 didn’t run out of 12). On macOS 15, or for the GOG version, use CrossOver, Vermut or the Whisky community fork instead.
Is there a Mac version?
No. The Steam store page lists Windows only, with 64-bit Windows 11 in the system requirements,[1] GOG lists it for Windows only,[2] and AppleGamingWiki marks native macOS support as not available.[3]
The current release has a DirectX 12 renderer: AppleGamingWiki notes that DirectX 12 mode can be started with the --launcher-skip launch option,[3] and the game’s DirectX 12 executable sits in bin\x64_dx12.[4] On a Mac, DirectX 12 is usually translated to Metal by Apple’s D3DMetal, part of the Game Porting Toolkit. Bridgeplay uses it for this game.
Running it with Bridgeplay (Steam, macOS 26 or later)
Bridgeplay runs the Steam version from the Mac Steam library. Its own entry for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered records:
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Maintainer test | Playable on an M5 Max with macOS 27, tested 22 October 2026 |
| Graphics API and backend | Direct3D 12 on D3DMetal |
| Engine | WineCX 11.17 |
| Player reports (as of 29 October 2026) | 12 reports: 5 playable, 1 with issues, 6 didn’t run |
Sources: Bridgeplay’s compatibility data and the live compatibility page.[4] [5] The listed reports came from M1, M4, M4 Max and M5 Macs (and one other model) on macOS 26.5 to 27.2. Half of them didn’t get the game running, so treat the maintainer result as one data point. The counts change as more players report.
What Bridgeplay sets for this game
Bridgeplay’s gamefix for The Witcher 3 (Steam app 292030) does two things automatically:[4]
- It starts the game with
--launcher-skip, because the REDlauncher’s embedded browser crashes under Wine (breakpoint 0x80000003). The game goes straight to the DirectX 12 executable. - It sets
HIDE_WINE_EXPORTS=1. Version 5.0 of the game turns off NVIDIA Streamline, and with it DLSS, when it detects Wine. Hiding Wine’s exports keeps DLSS available, which Bridgeplay answers with Apple’s MetalFX.
The one setting the maintainer recommends changing in the game: set Display Mode to Borderless Window. Exclusive fullscreen flickers and switches resolution when you Cmd-Tab away.[4] Other per-game options (graphics backend, Metal HUD, frame generation) are in Steam under Properties… › Bridgeplay.
If it doesn’t start for you, see troubleshooting, and report the result from the app so the page reflects your Mac.
What AppleGamingWiki reports for other tools
AppleGamingWiki collects player results for The Witcher 3 on Apple Silicon. As of 29 October 2026 it lists:[3]
| Method | Rating | Notes on the page |
|---|---|---|
| CrossOver | Perfect | “1 or 2 type of enemies are invisible but they are very easy to kill.” Reports include CrossOver Preview with D3DMetal on macOS 27.0.1 (M5 Pro and M4 Mac mini) and CrossOver 24.0.5 on macOS 15.2 (M4 Pro). An open CrossOver issue: the game doesn’t start from an external drive. |
| Wine | Playable | Some enemies are invisible (for example the Hounds of the Wild Hunt and the sirens in Skellige) and parts of Skellige’s coastline glitch. The report used Porting Kit with the GOG version on macOS 12.2. |
| Parallels | Perfect | No notes. |
The page also links a 2022 DXVK issue: the sirens rely on a Direct3D 11 feature (stream output) that DXVK couldn’t implement at the time.[3]
If you own the GOG version
Bridgeplay only works with Steam, so it can’t run the GOG copy. Vermut lists GOG Galaxy among its supported stores,[6] and the Wine result on AppleGamingWiki above was with the GOG version through Porting Kit.[3] CrossOver is the commercial option, with a 14-day trial.[7]
On macOS 15 Sequoia or earlier
Bridgeplay requires macOS 26 or later, so on macOS 15 these are the options:
- CrossOver: AppleGamingWiki has a report of the Steam version at 60 to 70 fps on an M4 Pro with macOS 15.2 and CrossOver 24.0.5 (High settings, Hairworks off).[3]
- Vermut is free and open source, needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later and runs Steam, GOG Galaxy and Epic in bottles. Its default graphics backend is DXMT; D3DMetal is available only if you install Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit yourself.[6]
- The Whisky community fork is free, needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later and has built-in Steam support.[8]
None of them guarantees the game will run, so check the reports for your Mac before you buy the game for it. The overview of every way to play Windows games on a Mac compares the tools.
